The KPop Demon Hunters characters blend the worlds of K-pop stardom and supernatural combat in this Netflix animated film. Director Maggie Kang, a long-time K-pop fan, revealed how she developed the characters through a mix of real influences. This highly anticipated film follows Huntrix K-pop group, who double as demon slayers protecting fans from evil forces. Their biggest challenge comes when the rival boy band, the Saja Boys’ demons, are revealed as supernatural threats.
Maggie Kang Director Talks Character Creation
Director Maggie Kang and co-director Chris Appelhans gathered character inspirations using a digital board filled with idols, actors, and models. They pulled in references from K-pop idols, Korean actors, anime, and fashion models to shape each animated role. Kang admitted fans were right in comparing animated faces to real-world idols, calling the guesses “pretty accurate.” She enjoyed seeing social media fans identify archetypes in characters that mirrored real K-pop personalities and roles.
Huntrix K-pop Group Each Have Unique Style
Each Huntrix K-pop member—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—was crafted with unique visuals and expressions to highlight their individual personalities. Kang worked longest on Rumi, adjusting her appearance over the years to reflect animation trends and Korean lighting styles. Zoey was given a sweet, heart-shaped mouth to show her cutesy charm, inspired by popular idol expressions. Mira’s design came from Korean model Ahn So Yeon, with Kang saying the influence was “kind of obvious.”
Fashion and Identity Define Huntrix
The three girls of Huntrix represent diversity in fashion, energy, and physical form on-screen and in attitude. Kang wanted each to have individuality beyond just hair colour, focusing on facial structure, posture, and emotion. Rumi carries a graceful, elegant Korean beauty while Mira is tall, lean and sophisticated in her style. Zoey, meanwhile, captures a youthful energy, matching the “baby member” feel that many K-pop groups embrace.
Saja Boys Demons Take From Real Idols
The Saja Boys’ demons drew inspiration from K-pop groups such as TXT, BTS, Stray Kids, ATEEZ, BIGBANG, and Monsta X. Each member represents classic boy band archetypes, from the romantic lead to the abs-showing visual to the cheeky maknae. “Baby Saja is obviously the maknae,” Kang said, noting their baby-faced look and rapper-style energy. The design for Jinu, voiced by Ahn Hyo-seop, took influence from Cha Eun-woo and Nam Joo-hyuk.
Mystery Saja Inspired by Anime
One standout among the KPop Demon Hunters characters is Mystery, whose face is hidden behind long purple hair. Unlike others, Mystery’s look came entirely from anime, with the animation team asking Kang to “trust us.” He has no visible face, partly for design effect and partly to reduce animation workload with fewer expressions. Kang laughed when describing the decision, saying it made it easier to animate only four detailed faces.

Shared Body Design Adds Consistency
Despite unique styles, most Saja Boys share one common body design in the CG model system. Only Abby Saja was designed differently, as Kang said they “bulked him up by about 20%.” The team used one base structure to ensure clean animation and cohesion across group scenes. That structure allowed individual facial and fashion customisations without delaying production schedules.
Fans Fuel Theories on Social Media
Following the teaser’s release, fans flooded social media with comparisons to real idols and actors. Kang welcomed the discussion, saying it shows fans are engaging with the story and identifying familiar patterns. She said all K-pop groups contain similar types—leader, visual, rapper, dancer—and her characters reflect those known roles. This response validated her creative direction, proving the characters resonate with global audiences, especially in the K-pop fandom.
